Narrower...

So it would seem, based on the comments I've received, that the winner by popular vote is my idea to write about the video games that have been, and are being created at Champlain College. So, first thing's first, if I'm write about what's going on I'll need to tap in to the gaming current and connect with upper classmen in the major, and see what they're working on. Really, I'm expecting the process of learning about the games, and perhaps a little of the people behind them as, while not without it's challenges, a vocation that is also not far from my comfort zone. I suppose the greatest challenge, as is almost always the case, will be finding a venue to publish it. The Champlain Current seems obvious, and while I don't read it often, from what I've seen it does not have a section dedicated to video games. While this may, or may not be something that the Current would be willing to explore, and may, or may not be something I would even be able to fully cover by myself, I feel that the omission of such a section in the Current would lead to the under representation of one of the most cutting edge, productive and least understood by outsiders of any major in the school.

The other project I would consider, simply because it is so close to my heart, is the pursuit of the opportunity to work in the fiction department of Games Workshop, or to write literature for Warhammer 40,000. However, at this point in time it would seem that my only course of action is not submit fiction of any kind to Black Library, or to any branch of Games Workshop, but rather to publish unrelated works of sci-fi literature elsewhere. Games Workshop is one of the oldest and largest competitor in a very niche market, and for this reason they only contract with established writers. Therefore, quickest way to the Black Library would be to build a reputation as an author of sci fi fantasy literature, which seems to be attainable through other venues only. What I have in mind is to prepare something I've written to be submitted to various sci fi/fantasy magazines. I would begin on two fronts; the first to polish and prepare a story for submission, the other is to contact editors from various sci fi magazines, in the attempt to decide where I would submit, and to create contacts at those venues.

Propositions

As a part of my final portfolio project, I've been asked to create a list of three potential projects.

Recently I was dumped. It sucks. I love this god damn girl, can't stand to be away from her and she can't even talk to me without bursting into tears. It's very sad, but anyways, a result of this rather unfortunate let down is that I've been full of angst, and generally quite moody. Aside from screaming at and throwing things into my wall, poetry has served as the only productive method of expressing myself in this trying time of my life. Thus, under duress of heartbreak my writing has turned to poetry for the first time in my life and I simply feel that now might be a good time to work on a compilation of poetry. I already have a number of compositions I've been working on, and would appreciate a critical eye to look them over. But, yeah. I guess I'm proposing the production of yet another compilation of depressed, youthful verse, like the world needs it.

I've always been a fan of the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe. It's got aliens, mutants, religious fanatics, powered exo-skeletons, space ships, daemons, xenocide, genocide, death and destruction on an epic scale in a future that knows only war. It's sweet. Anyways, I've always wanted to write a story in Warhammer universe, and would very much like to write a short story, polish it and submit it to be considered by the publishing arm of Games Workshop, who produces the game Warhammer 40,000, the Black Library. I wouldn't want to write anything but a short story. The problem with warhammer 40,0000 is that, of course, the rights are owned by a single company. Therefore, it would seem inprudent to write a full length novel that can only be published in one place. So, a Warhammer 40k short story then.

When I'm ever in Barnes and Noble, Borders, or whatever, if I go to the magazine rack I'm usually looking for something about video games. So I was thinking, seeing as a how my school is a veritable melting pot of game designers from across the country, where new games are constantly in the works, it might be cool to work on a ezine that focuses on finding out what games are being made at Champlain College. I could preview and review games, as well as profile some of the artists working on them. It would be interesting for me, and might help to facilitate communication between students within the game major, and beyond. I know for a fact that some of those kids are working on some very interesting, very unique projects that I think would be of interest to people whether they enjoy video games, or not.
